A beautiful, French immigrant arrives at New York Harbor – there’s something different about her, something larger than life. It’s the age of optimism but there’s a recession going on and immigration is a hot button issue. Powerful political forces are working against her, and a precious few see her potential. LIBERTY tells the story of one beautiful immigrant’s struggle, strife and success in the ever-evolving country she’s come to stand for.
A timeless commentary on society and politics, LIBERTY: A Monumental New Musical is a 90-minute traditional musical with a contemporary sound. Lady Liberty herself is the show’s protagonist – She is destined for greatness, yet scorned by America upon her arrival.
On average, nearly 20,000 people of all races, languages, cultures and backgrounds visit the Statue of Liberty every day. This glorious copper lady represents a rich history that is recognized by the diverse group of people who witness her. She has become an eternal symbol of hope and freedom.
In honor of this, we have plans to offer a variety of in-theater language translations, with the intention of opening our doors to a wider audience and thereby reaching the world-wide tourist market as well as the millions of New Yorkers whose first language is something other than English. We are working to be able to provide 6 to 10 language translations (including closed captioning for the hearing impaired) which will make the material accessible and entertaining to people of all countries and backgrounds.
