- The story of America’s most famous immigrant, who arrives from France in 1884 amid government-inspired anti-foreigner fervor. Liberty wins over the people of the U.S., who raise the money to build her pedestal.
- An exploration of the conflict between recent immigrants and “native-born” Americans in the 1880’s, with obvious parallels to the current immigration debate.
- A savvy political cartoon with an accessible and memorable contemporary score. It addresses issues of race, class, politics and history in a voice that speaks to a large audience.
- An opportunity for multiple generations to engage together in our shared history and national heritage.
The show was originally developed by an educational theater company - Theater Garden, Ltd. - whose mission is to bring history to life for students of all ages. Since its modest beginnings, LIBERTY has evolved into a full-fledged musical that is far more sophisticated, smart, fun and political in nature than the originating play.
LIBERTY, The Musical “serves as a reminder not only of what this country was meant to become, but how we have, in recent years, lost sight of the Golden Door. The show is urgent, relevant, topical theater that never becomes preachy even while it hits on the less honorable aspects of our history.”
- Scott C. Sickles, Producing Director, Workshop Theater Company
